Description

Commissioned by The Howard Hughes Corporation for Creekside Park Village Green in the Woodlands, Texas, Pedro S. de Movellán created the site-specific kinetic sculpture Ibis to engage the park’s visitors with the sculpture’s graceful, wind-induced movements and to complement and dialogue with its natural surroundings.  Creekside Park Village Green is a scenic green space situated within the larger Creekside Park development featuring restaurants, retail, office space, and residences.

Towering at over fifteen feet tall and a maximum wing span of thirteen feet, Ibis is a visual anchor in the park. De Movellán proposed the organic leaf shape to commune with surrounding trees and vegetation and the vibrant red color of the extended elements for maximum contrasting effect with the green environment and blue sky. Due to de Movellán’s exacting engineering, each of the three extended leaf elements rotates independently of one another, seeming to narrowly escape collision at times, and are activated by the slightest breeze through the park.

“We, at The Howard Hughes Corporation, commissioned this new work of art by the talented Pedro S. de Movellan to add to our collection of outdoor sculptures in The Woodlands,” said Robert Heineman, Vice President of Planning for The Howard Hughes Corporation. “Set within Creekside Park Village Green, this sculpture presents a dynamic counterpart to the interactive water feature in the village green and a visual enhancement to surrounding retail, walkways and seating areas.  It is our goal to install a unique, active work of art to intrigue visitors to the center and residents of The Woodlands.”

Pedro S. de Movellán is represented in Houston by Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino in collaboration with New York’s Davidson Gallery.  Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino oversaw the commission and production of Ibis in partnership with Kinzelman Art Consulting.
